An Ultra-Rare Lamborghini Countach Is Heading to Auction

This rare 180 Lamborghini could soon be headed for your garage. A Countach LP400 S, painted in its original livery and producing a V-12 roar, will be going under the hammer in the Netherlands this Friday. The coveted car is a Series Two version, of which just 105 were made, and it’s powered by a 3.9-liter V-12 engine—which originally made 375 horsepower—mated to a five-speed manual transmission. Top speed was said to be almost 180 mph when it was new, but the auction listing says this example has a top speed of 164 mph, and goes from a stop to 62 mph in 5.9 seconds. Those numbers won’t impress anyone who’s purchased a new car in the last 10 years, but, for the time, they were decent. The Countach is also famously impractical and a pain to drive, so the next buyer will likely be taking on a more-than-usual stewardship role in terms of old supercars, the service not being to themselves but to the wider community, which gets to look at the Countach rather than operate it. The listing, by auction house Car & Classic, hints at as much. “With just 65,246 km on the odometer, this is a seriously rare, seriously desirable opportunity. One for the truly dedicated, dyed-in-the-wool collector looking to fulfill a lifelong dream,” the listing says. The listing does not give an estimate on price, though it wouldn’t be a surprise if this example went for somewhere in the neighborhood of half a million, since the last several Countaches on Bring A Trailer fetched for about that much. Further, the example up for auction is in “fine mechanical order” and standard throughout under the hood. Inside, there is minimal wear and tear, though the dashboard has been reupholstered in Alcantara. The listing notes that there is some wear on the seat belt enclosures, as well as patina on the chrome near the ashtray, which suggests that the car was used as intended. The Countach, hopefully, will continue to be used as such, with proper care and maintenance, if nothing else than to protect the investment.
