Ayrton Senna’s 1986 Lotus F1 Car Could Fetch $12 Million at Auction

Ayrton Senna is one of the three or four best Formula 1 race car drivers of all time, and the mystique of his accomplishments has only grown in the years since his tragic death at the 1994 San Marino Grand Prix. The mystique of Senna’s cars has grown, too, including his 1986 Lotus F1 car that now could fetch $12 million at auction. The 1986 Lotus 98T won two races with Senna behind the wheel that year and also finished on the podium three times, in addition to five pole positions. It is the last F1 car to sport the John Player Special livery, according to RM Sotheby’s, which is hosting the auction. The Lotus 98T-3 is one of just four built for that year. It’s thought that the car’s 1.5-liter V-6 could make somewhere north of 1,000 horsepower, but no one quite knows for sure. “It was estimated that the difference between race day and qualifying trim amounted to as much as 300 brake-horsepower—far exceeding the limits of contemporary dynamometers,” according to Sotheby’s listing. “While the total output of these mythical cars is shrouded in mystery, the Lotus 98T remains one of the most devastatingly powerful Formula One cars in the history of the series—a giant from a time when there were no limits.” The car for sale is the 98T-3, which RM Sotheby’s says was only driven by Senna, all during the first several races of the 1986 season. Alain Prost won the Drivers’ Championship that year, with Senna finishing fourth behind Nigel Mansell and Nelson Piquet. Lotus sold the car in 1988, and it then passed through several hands and some of the world’s greatest car collections. The current owner acquired the car in 2016. That owner completed a full restoration of the car, and RM Sotheby’s says its restoration and provenance are fully documented. RM Sotheby’s also says that the 98T is “ready for a return to the track,” which would be quite spectacular, if unlikely, given the car’s value. Bidding for the car opens on March 4, and RM Sotheby’s offers a low estimate of $9.5 million and a high estimate of $12 million.
