This New 243-Foot Superyacht Has a Tree Rising Through Two Decks

Sanlorenzo’s new Virtuosity is the second superyacht in the 74Steel series, yet it offers something entirely different than the first, such is the beauty of bespoke. More than four years in the making, the 243-footer shares the same technical foundations—steel hull, aluminum superstructure, and hybrid diesel-electric propulsion system—as the inaugural hull the Italian yard launched last October, but has been radically personalized by the owner. (There were reportedly 18 months of calls between them and the yard before the design phase even started.) It boldly claims four industry firsts, including a living tree rising through two decks, an underwater aquarium in the hull, a waterside “ocean resort,” and an architectural reflecting pool. The vessel, which will rank alongside its predecessor, Silver Fox, as the largest in Sanlorenzo history once launched, was commissioned in collaboration with Fraser Yachts and developed by the in-house style department, with Zuccon International Project shaping the exterior and Studio Paolo Ferrari leading the interior design. Virtuosity showcases a more assertive silhouette than Silver Fox, eschewing a vertical bow in favor of a sleek arrow-shaped design. That sporty aesthetic is balanced with the shipyard’s signature elegance, resulting in a yacht that feels modern and edgy yet classic. “With the 74Steel Virtuosity we embraced a true change of scale, but above all a change of perspective,” designer Bernardo Zuccon said in a statement. The interior architecture was completely reimagined, too. “74Steel Virtuosity represents a decisive step forward in the way we conceive space on board,” adds Sanlorenzo CEO Tommaso Vincenzi. “From the integration of living nature to the transformation of technical volumes into experiential environments, every choice stems from a clear architectural vision.” The centerpiece of the main deck is a Ficus Nitida that rises through an oval void of approximately 172 square feet to the upper deck. Two lateral skylights channel natural light downward, nourishing the tree and creating a bright, airy atmosphere. Gardens are actually becoming more and more common on superyachts, but this will be one towering tree. Sanlorenzo says the entire yacht grew around this living feature, though it is far from the only showstopper onboard. On the lower deck lies a striking aquarium of roughly 376 square feet. A partially submerged glazed section of the hull creates a window below the waterline, affording guests a cinematic view of the marine landscape. Such underwater lounges are growing in popularity, with yards such as Feadship embracing the trend. The aquarium is part of a wellness area comprising a hammam, sauna, massage room, cryotherapy, and a relaxation area with an opening terrace. The lower deck is also home to the “ocean resort,” or glorified beach club, which stretches 59 feet from the swim platform to the first bulkhead. That results in nearly over 2,400 square feet of real estate, making it 40 percent larger than the beach club on Silver Fox. It is equipped with fold-out platforms, a large glass-bottom pool, and a lounge with a DJ booth, meaning seafarers can play with water toys by day and cut shapes by night. Back inside, a triple-height lobby with a staircase and lift connects the main deck to the two decks above. The main salon unfolds around that Ficus, offering up comfy seating and a bar. On the starboard side lies a custom wine cellar, while forward are two guest cabins, one VIP, and an owner’s suite with a rotating bed that swivels to create more space in the dressing room and en suite. Upstairs, the bridge deck is outfitted with a winter garden, a formal dining area, and a bar. Two additional guest cabins, the captain’s cabin, and the wheelhouse can also be found on this deck, along with a touch-and-go helipad and sport deck. A few more stairs up, the owner’s deck features a cinema lounge and a second owner’s suite that opens onto a reflecting pool with a sunpad at the center. Higher still, the sundeck holds a gym, another pool, and an al fresco entertaining area. In terms of decor, a light palette inspired by the Mediterranean is paired with soft curves and continuous surfaces, giving the living quarters a calm, flowing feel. Studio Paolo Ferrari also worked with Sanlorenzo on creating custom furniture that is a cut above the usual sofa. Sanlorenzo has not said when Virtuosity will hit the seas.
