Michael Mann’s 2023 movie Ferrari is an excellent period piece with a lot of great Ferraris—and serveal appearances from a Peugeot 403 as well. Adam Driver, who played Enzo Ferrari, drove the green number in several scenes in the movie, and now it’s up for auction.
The car, for sale on Bring a Trailer, has documents to prove its use in the movie, which was a longtime passion project for its director.
“Undoubtedly a collector’s car, but also a piece of automotive history for Ferrari collectors and a memorabilia item for film enthusiasts,” the seller, WolfBarnato, says. The listing notes that a lever-actuated hydraulic cylinder is installed to employ the rear brakes, and WolfBarnato says that was for Adam Driver’s benefit in operating the car while shooting the movie.
The 403 is powered by a 1.5-liter 4-cylinder engine mated to a four-speed manual transmission. That engine was good enough for 56 horsepower when new, which was enough to get the car moving since it weighed just over one ton. The 403 up for sale might be low mileage, with just 28,000 kilometers shown on the five-digit odometer.
Over 1.1 million Peugeot 403s were built during its production run from 1955 until 1966 in a wide variety of body styles, from a four-door sedan to a two-door pickup truck to a five-door station wagon. You can still see plenty of them on the roads in Europe, and 403s have been in countless movie and TV productions, probably most famously as Columbo’s car of choice. Peter Falk drove a 1959 403 cabriolet in that show, a bit of car casting that is just about perfect. The 403 was the first car that Peugeot ever made more than a million of, and the auto has a cult following outside of its movie and TV appearances.
Still, as a result of them being so common, it appears even the 403 that appeared in Ferrari isn’t worth that much. The current bid is sitting at 2,500 euros, or a little under $3,000, as of this writing, with four days left in the auction. Possibly the price tag will crest five figures, though it’s hard to say. In Italy, where the car is being sold, it isn’t exactly a rarity.
