It was a decade defined by excess, the pursuit of power, and a hyper-stylistic aesthetic. The 1980s brought us the pulsating soundtrack of Phil Collins’ “In the Air Tonight” as pastel-clad detectives Sonny Crockett and Ricardo Tubbs infiltrated a neon underworld in the hit show Miami Vice, and fictional corporate raider Gordon Gekko uttered the era’s seemingly unofficial mantra that “greed, for lack of a better word, is good,” in the 1987 film Wall Street. The same year that the movie premiered, the period’s zeitgeist was perfectly manifested in the automotive arena by one model alone, the Ferrari F40.
The car that, in poster form, would eventually grace the walls of that generation’s adolescent gearheads was introduced as the ultimate commemoration of the marque’s 40th anniversary. Especially noteworthy, in hindsight, is that it was also the last Prancing Horse that had its development presided over by founder Enzo Ferrari, who passed away just over a year after its reveal. And what a reveal it proved to be.
Maranello’s ne plus ultra at the time, the F40 supercar was the first production model from the marque to be primarily dressed in composite materials, according to Ferrari. The body was designed by Pininfarina and comprised 11 panels covering a 96.4-inch wheelbase chassis, combining tubular steel and the additional use of composites. Enhancements for air management included NACA ducts and the car’s character-defining rear wing.
The F40’s fury comes from a 2.9-liter twin-turbo V-8—delivering 471 hp and 425.5 ft lbs of torque— mated to a five-speed manual transmission. The power-train configuration allows the 2,425-pound (dry weight) car to catapult from zero to 62 mph in 4.1 seconds and reach a top speed of 201 mph. Ferrari’s own archival information regarding the F40, on the automaker’s official website, notes that “a height-adjustable electronically controlled suspension system also became available as an option during the production period.”
Yet the examples that eschewed the latter suspension setup and did not have a catalytic converter, referred to as “non-cat, non-adjust” cars, are now the most sought after of the 1,311 that were built by the end of the model run in 1992. It is one of these preferred versions of the F40 that will be offered through Broad Arrow Auctions on October 10.
“The F40 continues to be an extremely sought-after Ferrari and, as we know, the top examples of any desirable model are always of the highest interest . . . The exquisite F40 offered at our upcoming Zoute Concours Auction [in Belgium] is exactly that, a ‘non-cat’, ‘non-adjust,’ European version with just over 10,000 km,” says Jean-Louis Baldanza, consignment consultant for Broad Arrow Auctions. “The paintwork is completely original and shows fantastic weave on all the panels and roof. It is certainly one of the best F40s I have seen, and it is ready to be driven and enjoyed by its next custodian.”
Broad Arrow’s lot description identifies the example crossing the auction block as chassis No. 84250, which was sold new to Dr. Klaus Berg of Germany in 1990. It was granted Ferrari Classiche Red Book certification in 2011, and the matching-numbers car remains, for all intents and purposes, the way it appeared when it left the factory, and has had only two other owners added to its provenance since Dr. Berg’s stewardship.
“Despite presenting as ‘new,’ the F40 [on offer] has never required any restoration . . . It has been run regularly and, importantly, has always been stored in optimal conditions,” says Baldanza. “Although it would make a fantastic museum piece due to its originality and low mileage, I would see it being of particular interest to a discerning collector who is looking for one of the best examples of the F40 available today and who will enjoy it as it was meant to be—on the road.”
This will be Broad Arrow’s inaugural sale in conjunction with the Zoute Grand Prix Car Week, and, according to the auction house, it will feature over 75 highly valued vehicles. Of those, a few, as with this prized Ferrari, are from the Aleggria Collection, which also includes a 1992 Bugatti EB110 GT, a 1987 Porsche 959 Komfort, and four other rarities. As for the F40, it carries a high-end estimate of €3.2 million (approximately $3.75 million).
