This One-of-a-Kind Ferrari 812 Competizione Could Fetch $2 Million at Auction

Driving Ferrari’s 812 Superfast when it was new in 2017, I recall marveling that the naturally aspirated 12-cylinder berlinetta was an expression of pure, unadulterated performance . . . a holy terror in an age being overtaken by hybrid-this and electric-that. Maranello’s top performer at the time also had the most powerful non-turbo engine ever used in a Ferrari road car. With a front-mid-mounted 6.5-liter V-12 that shifted through a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, the 812 is capable of screaming to a 9,500 rpm redline, with blistering acceleration to match. The coupe was followed by the 812 GTS in 2019, a retractable-hardtop version that delivers the same deliriously addictive performance in convertible form. If those models weren’t enough to tickle the fancies of Ferrari addicts, 2021 saw the introduction of the 812 Competizione and Competizione A (“A” for Aperta, Italian for “open”). Both are track-focused versions that up the output from 789 hp to 819 hp, add an independent four-wheel-steering system, and incorporate extensive aerodynamic upgrades that include distinctive rear buttresses and a unique carbon-finned hood designed to increase downforce and reduce turbulence. Like the predecessors they draw inspiration from, the F12tdf and earlier 599 GTO, the 812 Competizione variants were more limited in production than the standard model, in this case comprising 999 examples of the berlinetta and 599 of the convertible. The only thing more special than one of the examples of the 812 Competizione is one wearing Ferrari’s Tailor Made label. One such car is coming to the RM Sotheby’s ModaMiami auction on February 27 at the Biltmore Hotel Coral Gables in Florida. Gord Duff, president of RM Sotheby’s, calls the 812 Competizione “a defining car for Ferrari. It is one of the last naturally aspirated V-12 road cars from Maranello, and for many collectors, that matters. A high-revving engine and a more mechanical driving experience, simpler in concept than many of today’s hybrid-assisted hypercars, is exactly what people are gravitating toward.” While no Ferrari is an ordinary car, customers commissioning a Tailor Made model avail themselves the opportunity to imagine any number of colorways, materials, and design details to express their own exclusive automotive vision. The matte-gold color of the forged racing wheels complements the car’s longitudinal stripes running nose to tail. Arears of both the driver- and passenger-side windows is number 38 in matte gold, a reference to the 38 turns of the 24 Hours of Le Mans’ Circuit de la Sarthe. The car’s striking interior features racing seats upholstered in Poltrona Frau Heritage Castagno leather, which is also featured on the door sills and luggage straps. Black Alcantara and carbon fiber cover the majority of the interior, with discrete gold accents on paddle shifters and elsewhere on the trim. Both Tailor Made doorsill kickplates—in carbon fiber—are inscribed Campa un giorno e campalo bene (Live each day and live it well). “With allocations reserved for Ferrari’s most established clients, it was coveted from the start, and the market has continued to reinforce that demand,” Duff tells Robb Report of the 812 Competizione. “This example stands out further with its extremely unique Tailor Made specification, including the signatures of Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz on the engine components, a detail that resonates strongly with Ferrari collectors. It feels perfectly suited for the Miami stage.” At $910,390 when new, this 2023 single-owner car shows just 2,361 miles, is extensively optioned, and now carries an estimated value ranging from $1.8 million to $2 million.
